Halloween Mason Jar Luminary on a Sidewalk

I’ve never been a big Halloween decorator. I don’t tend to lean toward the spooky or creepy, so I’ve kind of just skipped over decorating for the scary holiday altogether.

But if I can make it beautiful? Oh, I’m all over that! So if you’re looking to add a pretty spin to your Halloween (or could use some cute centerpieces!), these simple mason jar + lace luminaries are for you. Let’s get crafting!

How to Make Halloween Luminaries Step-by-Step

Here is exactly what we used to make these not-so-spooky luminaries!

1. Cover each jar with decoupage.

I began by putting a layer of decoupage on the entire outside of my mason jar. My method wasn’t particularly scientific for this. I just made sure the whole thing was covered so that the lace would adhere to the jar easily.

2. Wrap the lace around the jar.

Then I took a piece of lace that was slightly taller than the mason jar and slightly longer than the circumference and wrapped it around the jar. The lace looked like a lace tube at this point, but don’t worry! It will end up being a perfect fit.

3. Add another layer of decoupage.

To make sure the lace stayed in place on the jar, I put another layer of decoupage on top of the lace. I also painted some on the bottom of the jar as well so I could attach the lace there.

4. Fold the excess lace onto the bottom of the jar.

Next, I pressed the excess lace down on the bottom of the mason jar, painting over it with decoupage to help it stay in place. My beautiful luminaries were starting to take shape!

5. Dry completely and trim.

I let the decoupage dry for 24 hours to make sure the lace stayed firmly in place. (Hey, that rhymes!) Then I trimmed the lace at the top of the jar so that it stopped right under the area where the lid twists on, looking neat and tidy.

6. Embellish the mason jar luminaries with ribbon.

Finally, I wrapped a piece of thin gold ribbon around the top of the jar where the lace ended, securing it in the back with some hot glue.

7. Enjoy your Halloween mason jar luminaries!

With that, my Halloween mason jar luminaries were complete, and I could take them outside to adorn our sidewalk and welcome trick-or-treaters!

That’s it– it really was such an easy project!

For the bridal shower centerpieces, I made 12 large mason jars, 8 standard sized jars, 8 jelly jars, and 2 mini jars, and it only took one afternoon + drying time. Quick and simple, plus the obvious perk of serving multiple functions! Win!

I think these jars will be a beautiful way to greet trick-or-treaters on Halloween, but who am I kidding… they’ll only be worried about the candy! Oh well, maybe their moms will enjoy them! 😀

Feel free to swap out the black lace for a different color or fabric to match another occasion or holiday.
Instead of using glass mason jars, go with white bags and let the kids decorate!
Use faux tea light candles to cut down on safety hazards. Some even have remotes, so it would be easy to enjoy these all season.

Easy Halloween Luminaries

Materials

Scissors
Decoupage {I used matte finish.}
Thin Gold Ribbon
Hot Glue Gun + Glue Sticks
Mason Jar {The wide mouth kind worked well because it was easier to put in the candles.}
Paint Brush
Lace

Instructions

Cover each jar with decoupage. Do these one at a time so the decoupage doesn't dry before you are finished decorating.
Take a piece of lace that is slightly taller than the mason jar and slightly longer than the circumference and wrap it around the jar.
Paint another layer of decoupage over the lace and on the bottom of the jar.
Press the excess lace down on the bottom of the mason jar, painting over it with decoupage to help it stay in place.
Let the decoupage dry for 24 hours, then trim the lace at the top of the jar so that it stops right under the area where the lid twists on.
Wrap a piece of thin gold ribbon around the top of the jar where the lace ended, securing it in the back with some hot glue.
