Organized Mudroom Reveal!
Come take the grand tour of our organized mudroom reveal, featuring beautiful and organized built-ins, chunky craftsman style trim work, an overhauled coat closet, and a pretty and practical command center gallery wall!
I have been sharing our mudroom in bits and pieces as we’ve completed projects over the past few months, and since it is now finished (yay!) I thought I’d give a little tour of everything all at once, share sources, and talk about what’s next! Yippee!
As a reminder, this is what our mudroom looked like the day we moved in, a little over two years ago…
It was a teeny, blank white room, but it had a cute little nook that I knew would be just perfect for built-ins someday! Until that day came, though, we set down our entry bench and hung a shelf with hooks from our last house and called it a day.
On the other side of the mudroom, we had a very small, very basic coat closet with just a single wire shelf.
It was fine, but I knew we could do better. Let’s take a look at what the mudroom looks like today!

If you walk in our front door, take a few steps past our small entryway and look to your left, this is what you’ll see…
That’s the door out to our garage, which I painted my favorite shade of aqua, because isn’t everything more fun with a little pop of color?! 🙂
If you’re really observant, you may have noticed a change since the last time I showed this angle of the mudroom…
Chunkier trim! We have slowly been changing out the trim work in our house to give it more character, so while our friend was here installing the built-ins (which I’ll show you in just a minute!), he also put the craftsman style trim in this space, and I think it makes a big difference! It’s all in the details!
Our little command center gallery wall is still keeping us organized! It is the perfect spot to keep any reminders and paperwork that the boys need to return to school.

Our coat closet got new trim work as well…
And inside, we ripped out the wire shelf and installed IKEA ALGOT shelving (now called BOAXEL), which really helps to maximize our storage space and keep our shoes and outerwear more organized. (If you’re looking to design an ALGOT closet for your home, I have a post about my process for choosing the right pieces here.)

The other side of the mudroom is truly my favorite part, though. I have been waiting and waiting for the aforementioned built-ins since we moved in two years ago, and last week, a talented woodworking friend of ours put them in for us! (You can get all of the nitty gritty details about them in this post.)
On a day to day basis, we hang our coats and bags in this space, but I couldn’t resist decorating it up and making it look pretty for a bit too!

Sure, my boys will probably mess it all up as soon as they walk in the door from school, but it was fun while it lasted! 😉

(PS… I am loving those big 16 x 20 frames like the one in the middle of the top shelf. I have the gray one in here, 4 gold ones in my dining room, and 3 wood ones in the living room! They are such a great size and fill wall space nicely!)
I get a huge grin on my face every time I walk in from the garage now because instead of stark white and boring, this space is now welcoming, organized, and a great “home base” for entering and leaving the house!
(And speaking of the garage, we’ve been working hard out there too! With the weather getting colder, we wanted to get it organized enough that we could park both cars in there, so keep an eye out for some organizing projects coming in that space too!)
Let’s take a quick look at some “before and after” shots!

What a beautiful, organized space! Lovely job pulling it all together, and I’m sure it’s such a relief to have the after school chaos organized for a busy family. Love it!
It really was! Who knew kids could resemble a tornado so closely? Lol! Thank you so much for your sweet words! Hope you’re having a great week, Tara!

OMG, what a difference. I have to say my favorite part is the trimwork!!! It adds so much to that space. The built-ins are fantastic. We built a new Ryan Home last year and are in the process of making changes and this gives me some incentive. Great job.
I LOVE the trimwork. He did such an awesome job. It really does completely transform the space! Thanks so much for stopping by, Amy! Enjoy your week! <3

Wow, wow, WOW! So beautiful! I appreciate you saying that you normally hang things on the hooks and that they are styled specifically for pictures, because I was like how does she keep it looking like that all the time? Pinning!
The mudroom also was only finished recently so we haven’t had much time to make it messy yet! 🙂 Haha! Thanks so much, Marissa! Have a great week! <3

Beautiful! But realistically…white in a mudroom and all those pretties! Where I live a mudroom is a mudroom…haha! Granted we don’t have mud just laying around but it is all that outside stuff that doesn’t bode well with white. But one can always dream can’t they? Maybe if I lived in the city instead of the mountains, things would be different. Sigh! Good job Abby.
I totally understand, Helen! I grew up in the mountains! 🙂 We are fortunate to have a garage where we can keep a lot of the outside stuff so I’m hoping the mudroom can stay white and pretty. Time will tell! 🙂 Thanks so much for stopping by. Have a great week!

Beautiful Abby! My favorite is the command center wall. ?
I love it, too! It’s definitely helping to keep us organized this school year! 🙂 Hope you have a great week, Barbara!
~Abby =)
Everything about this is lovely!!! Your command center is great and love the trim and aqua doors.
Aw, thanks so much, Jasmin! I am definitely loving it. Hope you have an awesome week! <3

Abby – I like how this is open, light and airy! We installed a mudroom in our laundry room earlier this year and decided to go with the “open” concept like you. In other words, no lockers! We realized our kids wouldn’t be disciplined enough to open the locker and put their items in it.
I agree. I think this system sets them up for success. I guess time will tell! 🙂 Hope you have a great week, Tamara!

Your boys must be so cooperative in mom’s pursuit of orderly. That is the cleanest mudroom I’ve ever seen in my entire life. Mine in “the exploding backpack” room! I picture something like graduation cap throwing when they walk through the door, only with shoes and backpacks.
While mine is “clean” it’s definitely difficult to keep tidy lol. Kuddos! Your entire house is always an inspiring journey.
Our mudroom has only been finished for about a week so they definitely haven’t had much time to make a mess yet. I guess time will tell! 🙂 Haha! Thanks for stopping by, Deanna! <3
~Abby =)
Oh, what a lovely, homey space! I _wish_ I had a mudroom. Those weren’t necessarily a thing in a Craftsman style house. I love the trim. I have a lot of the original in my house. Someone painted it over, though 🙁 That would be a huge project to strip, replace/repair if needed and stain. I still have a dream for doing that. Or moving to a single-level house with a mudroom 🙂
Thanks so much, Wendy! Hope you’re having a great week! <3
~Abby =)
‘Mudroom’ doesn’t do this justice! Wow it’s gorgeous, so light and open! Pinning this for inspiration, thanks.
Aw, thank you so much! <3
~Abby =)
Wow! Absolutely stunning, Abby! Love the shoe shelf you made in your hall closet. We’re looking to redo our mudroom as well. Definitely pinning yours to my inspiration board.:)
Thanks so much, Kristal! Have a wonderful week! <3

I too have been scouring the internet for mudroom ideas. Love what you did. We’re trying to figure out how high to hang hooks & a shelf. Would you mind sharing dimensions for the distance from the bench top to the hooks & from the bench top to the shelf?
Thank you!
Hi there! The distance from the bench top to the middle of the hooks is 43″, and the distance from the bench top to the bottom of the shelf is 54″. I hope this helps!
