Sunroom Summer Decor and Updates

It’s been way too long since I’ve shared updates to our sunroom decor, and it’s all decorated for summer too!

I feel like the past few months have been sort of an odd season when it comes to progress on our house. We’ve been busy working on different rooms, but our projects have all been small improvements like painting walls, switching out furniture, hanging window coverings and curtains, or changing out art, none of which really constituted their own blog post.

All of these small changes started to add up, though, and suddenly I feel like many of our spaces have turned a corner, going from a bare, unfinished, just-moved-in sort of look to looking a little more polished and lived in. This was definitely the case with our sunroom, the little nook that sits right off of our kitchen and living room.

We always knew that the sunroom was going to become one of our favorite spaces in our house. Being a bit set off from the rest of the house makes it feel kind of like a little escape, and it is definitely the best room in the house to take in the view!

While many people who have our same floor plan (our house is a Palermo by Ryan Homes, so there are lots of people with similar houses to ours) use this space as a breakfast nook-type eating area, with a dining room and stools at our kitchen island, we didn’t feel like we needed another eating spot, so we decided to create a little seating area instead.

At first we didn’t have a deck or patio, but we did own outdoor furniture, so we just plopped it down in the sunroom since we didn’t have anywhere else to put it, and it just so happened to be the perfect size for the space.

Once we built the deck, though, the outdoor furniture moved outside and I was again left with a blank space to fill. It was a bit more challenging than I expected to be to find furniture for this space because it is not as big as a living room seating area would be, so I needed pieces that were smaller in scale.

After lots of searching, measuring, and searching some more, I came across this cute set (on sale!), and the sunroom began to come together.

I loved the whitewashed wood look of the furniture, but the cushions were a little more yellow-ish than I expected them to be (they appeared more yellow in person than they do in this photo!), so I picked out some blue ticking striped fabric, and my friend Kristi from Klover House and her talented mama were kind enough to re-cover them for me.

While the cushions were being re-covered, I took the time to paint the space. I decided to use my favorite gray paint, Behr Marquee Silver City, but I had the guy at Home Depot mix it at half strength so that it would be a little lighter. I pictured this room having a light, bright, and airy look, and the resulting color ended up being perfect.

We had already added some woven wood shades shortly after we moved in (ours are the Bali Abaca color), but after I finished painting, we hung curtains, which actually ended up being a huge debacle. (You can read about it in this post. 😉 )

I debated for a while about the best way to hang curtains in this room, particularly around the 3 windows in a row. Ultimately I decided not to hang them between each window because I was afraid they would impede the view. I just put two panels on each end of the triple windows, and that has worked well for us. (I only used one set of curtains on the double window and on the doors. We never close them, so they are more just to look pretty.)

Finally, I brought in some pretty details like a lamp, faux plants, a simple side table, lanterns, pillows and throws, and some small decor pieces.

I actually painted this cute box + mason jar combo at a local shop that holds classes to make cute signs and decor pieces. It was a fun and simple project, and I’m sure I’ll be using it all around the house!

My absolute favorite part about the sunroom is that it’s a great place to snuggle up and read a book, chat with friends, or just spend time as a family.

We still have a few more things on our to-do list for this room, like trimming out the windows with the same craftsman style trim that we have around our living room windows, and I would love to plank the vaulted ceiling at some point!

It is exciting that after more than a year and a half in this house, it’s finally starting to feel cozy and homey. We still have a long to-do list, but it has been fun to check things off one by one and see the spaces transform before our eyes! I have more updated spaces to show you over the next few weeks, so keep an eye out for those!
