Let’s Go Adventuring: A Shared Boy Bedroom

Today is the day– it’s reveal day!! If you’re new around here, I’ve been participating in the One Room Challenge, where bloggers take on an entire room makeover in just six weeks! We had just moved into our new house when the challenge started, so I pretty much had my pick of any room in the house to work on.
Though it was tempting to pick a main living area like the living room or morning room, there are two little people who live here that I wanted to make sure felt very much at home in their new space, so we decided to tackle our boys’ shared bedroom.
A Shared Boys’ Bedroom Reveal
Connor (age 7) had some very firm ideas of what he wanted for his space. In fact, the whole room design centered around his choices of plaid bedding and a bear pillow.
Using his choices as our starting point, we decided to go with a “Let’s Go Adventuring!” theme to create an all-boy bedroom that is a cozy place for the Cs to call their own. They are loving how it turned out, and I must say that I’m a little smitten myself! 🙂
Unlike our last house where the boys’ room had to serve multiple functions– sleeping, clothes storage, toy storage, art space, etc.– their room in the new house is right next door to a full playroom, so our only real needs in this space were a place for the boys to sleep and room to store their clothes. For that reason, we were able to go with the “side by side beds” that the boys requested, rather than the bunk beds they had in our last house.
I originally had put white beds in the design plan, but Connor quickly vetoed that idea and said they weren’t masculine enough. 🙂 I’m kind of glad he did because I ended up loving these wood grain beds we found. The color is so rich and really adds a lot to the space.
Window coverings were another thing I went back and forth about in the boys’ room. I had curtains in their last room, but they never felt quite right. When I found these roman shades from Select Blinds, though, I knew they would be perfect.
Select Blinds was kind enough to provide the blinds for the Cs’ room AND offer an additional 5% off of any sale they are having to Just a Girl and Her Blog readers with the code ABBY.
What I especially love about these shades is that they are cordless. I don’t have to worry about the boys getting caught in the cords or getting hurt. Their unique design allows us to simply pull down the shades to block out the light and push them back up to let more light into the space. So easy!
I had so much fun picking out art and accessories for this room! I found a lot of great pieces from Hobby Lobby, including this cool canvas from the Lindsay Letters line and the metal “C.” I found the horned mount on clearance at Target several months ago and snatched it up, knowing I would be able to use it someday!
The only thing that Caleb (age 5) requested during this whole process was to have a dinosaur somewhere in the room. It didn’t exactly go with the theme and it was a little more orange-y red than I would have liked, but this is the one he picked, so we’ll display it proudly! 😉
The type A part of me was also more than a little excited to find a snow globe that contained the very same bear that I had chosen for…
…the bookends! It’s a small detail and I wasn’t sure that anyone would notice, but as soon as I brought the snow globe home, Con said, “Hey! That’s the bear that’s on our dresser!” I knew as a fellow type A, he would get me. 🙂
I of course had to sneak in more Cs around the room…
And I totally lucked out with the poster of a compass patent that just happened to match the room perfectly.
We ended up with some pretty cool light fixtures as well. Again, Connor had spotted the ceiling fixture even before we moved into our house and loved it, so we went with that. I knew I wanted something for above their beds that they could switch on and off themselves, but I didn’t want to hard wire anything because the boys may not share a room forever, and I didn’t want to be totally committed to a certain placement. I found these cute plug-in wall lights from IKEA, though, and at just $20 each, they were a no-brainer.
Speaking of IKEA, we used their ALGOT shelves (now called BOAXEL) to create some semblance of organization around here 😉 , and it is working beautifully!
It’s just so cute to watch little Caleb be able to go in and choose his own clothes right at his height!
So that’s their space! It feels great to have one room completely finished (at least for now 😉 ), and the Cs seem to love it, so I’m chalking it up as a win!

What a fun bedroom! I love how the colors are bold but not overpowering. You are such a good mom to listen to what your boys want (even the orange dinosaur!)
Oh yes, just had to include the dinosaur! Lol! Thanks so much, Aimee! Hope you’re having a great week!

Abby, it is so gorgeous! A wonderful little boy masculine appeal! One small touch I particularly like are the hooks on the wall for pajamas, jackets or those nights when a little boy is just too tired to put his clothes away. A lot of beautiful touches that would make a boy feel right at home in a new place. Thanks for sharing with us!
Thanks so much, Jackie! It was such a fun project to work on with the boys! 🙂 Hope you’re having a fabulous week!
~Abby =)
What a beautiful and fun room that your boys will enjoy for years to come! I love all the little adventurous accessories, and how the dark stripe really pops off the wall. It has been fun watching the room transform from week to week, nice job!
Thanks so much, Bree! <3
~Abby =)
Such a cute space for your boys! Love all the little details! Great job Abby!
Aw, thanks so much, Denise! <3
~Abby =)
This looks so cozy! I love that your first focus in the new home was making the boys comfortable. They are going to make so many great brother memories in this room.
Aw, thanks so much, Jackie! They definitely are loving it! 🙂 Have a great day!
~Abby =)
Ohmigosh! I love the theme…. and the plaid 🙂 You did such a great job in the details, Abby.
Aw, thanks so much, Brittany! It was such a fun project to do with the boys! 🙂
~Abby =)
Eek! It’s awesome!! Wow, I’m really impressed with how nice it turned out – and definitely manly. Caleb’s dinosaur fits right in since it matches the red bears and books. 😉 Now you’re making me want to redo my boys’ room…but they aren’t quite “big boys” just yet…patience! Great job!
He certainly loves his dinosaur! 🙂 Thanks so much, Tiff! Hope you’re having a wonderful week! <3
~Abby =)
It’s awesome, Abby! Cute but not cutesy and very kid-friendly. I might have to go snag some of those lights you found at Ikea for my guest room. I hope you have a nap or a pedicure planned today because you’ve earned a break 😉
Aw, thanks so much, Samantha! I’m actually getting a pedicure with my mom and sister this weekend which will be WONDERFUL! 🙂 Hope you’re having a fabulous week! <3
~Abby =)
Such a perfect space for two growing boys! I love the “Adventure” theme and those lights above the bed are perfect. Great job on a beautiful makeover.
Thanks so much, Katie! They are loving it! 🙂 Hope you’re having an awesome week!

Love it! Such a great space for two little dudes. The sweet picture of the two of them above their nightstand is my favorite part. 🙂
I love that picture of them, too! 🙂 Thanks so much, Laura! <3
~Abby =)
Abby, I love everything about this room! It is kids-friendly, yet very masculine. And, like a Laura pointed out, I love the picture you chose. It is so meaningful in both ways – the theme of the room and their lives (they are at the beginning of the long journey).
Aw, thanks so much, Nadia! I really do love how it all came together! 🙂 Hope you’re having a wonderful week!
~Abby =)
It’s perfect, Abby! What lucky boys to be able to spend all of their free time in there!
They are definitely enjoying it! Thanks so much, Lindsay! <3

Well done Abby and Donnie and Congratulations again on your beautiful new home….

Abby! I love it!! What an awesome space for the C’s. The stripes and plaid are right up my alley – and I love that sweet picture of them above the nightstand. Fabulous job, friend!
Definitely one of my fav parts of the room… love that picture! 🙂 Thanks so much, sweet friend! Have a fabulous weekend!

Oh wow Abby, the room looks so beautiful. I love the colors and the adventurer theme. Such a pretty room for the C’s.
Thanks so much, Sabrina! I was excited with how it all turned out! 🙂 Have a wonderful weekend!
~Abby =)
Oh, it turned out so awesome and perfect for the boys. I love the colors. I have the “Be courageous…” wall art in my son’s room too. It’s such a great print. We also have the wall lights in our master bedroom, and they are the best reading lights.
I love all the little Cs hiding around. Such an easy way to make a statement in decorating boys’ rooms.
Thanks so much, Heather! <3
~Abby =)
This came together SO well, my friend!! I adore the little gallery wall over the dresser. <3 It's amazing how one finished space can help you feel so much more settled! If everything else is chaos, just walk in there and shut the door. 😉 xo
SO true! Feels great to have one room completely finished! 🙂 Have a wonderful weekend, sweet friend! <3
~Abby =)
This is such an awesome kids room! Love the colors and that ceiling light is so cool!! Congrats on a job well done!
Thanks so much, Jen! Have a fabulous weekend! <3
~Abby =)
Do those over the bed lamps get hot? I need to find a good reading light for my kid’s loft bed. That looks like a good fit.
You know, I haven’t really felt them! I am guessing that if you leave the bulb on for a long time it would get hot. We usually only have them on for a few minutes before bed to read stories. They’ve been working well for us so far!
~Abby =)
You did a beautiful job — their room is warm, inviting and well put-together! The style is timeless – I can see it easily working for them even as they grow older. And I love those dark wood beds too – they stand up nicely against the plaids and colors! Can’t wait to see more of your home as it comes together!
Thank you so much for your sweet words, Kristine! You are so thoughtful! Hope you’re having a wonderful weekend!
~Abby =)
It looks like the perfect room for little boys! My two boys are all grown up now but I can imagine how much they would have enjoyed this room. Love the colors and all of the accessories. It came together beautifully.
You are so sweet! Thank you, Carol!
~Abby =)
It looks awesome! My boys would have loved a room like that!
Thank you, Cherryl! <3
~Abby =)
This is such a cute room! I love the side-by-side twin beds. Have they started jumping from one to the other yet? 🙂 I know I would as a kid!
I think they were doing that the first day we put them up, lol! Boys! 🙂 Hope you’re having a wonderful weekend, Amy!
~Abby =)
Love these beds. They are out of stock, but I am wondering if you’d say the signature brand has stood up to the boys well. 🙂
Thank you! We have had zero issues with the beds! They have been really sturdy, and the boys still love them. (And my oldest is as big as me now, and it holds his weight just fine!) Hope you have a wonderful weekend!
This looks fantastic! You did an amazing job! I love it!

I bought your book about 2 weeks ago and I wanted to thank you! I was a little lost on how to get my blog started and I feel so much more prepared now that I have read your book!
Thank You!

I’m so glad it was helpful, Dana! Best of luck with your blog!

Adorably Cute room!
Hi Abby! The boys’ room is just perfect. We will be moving into our new home next year, and I am sure to “steal” some of your ideas. Can’t wait for the other rooms to be ready now. All the best, all the way from India…
Thank you so much, Pallavi! Have fun decorating your new home!
~Abby =)
I really love how it turned out. Everything goes together so well. I gotta ask, though, how long will it stay this clean? I would have to nag my boys all day long to get their room to look like this. They are collectors of all kinds of what I would call, “little bits of junk.” How do you tame the clutter in a kids room?
Lol! About 5 minutes! I wish it would stay perfect all the time, but most of the time the beds are not made and I’m bugging them to pick up their clothes off the floor. 🙂 All of their toys “live” in a room next door, though, so that does help minimize clutter in their bedroom! Hope you have a great weekend!
~Abby =)
Abby your boys’ room turned out absolutely DARLING! Love it all cutie! xo
You are the sweetest! Thank you so much, friend! <3 Hope you're having a great weekend!
~Abby =)
Abby, the boys’ room turned out great! I love hearing how the boys gave you ideas for their room!
Thank you so much, Jann! Hope you are having a wonderful weekend!
~Abby =)
Absolutely love this – great job! (I really appreciate how the bottom edge of the raised Roman shades line up with the navy racing stripe – excellent attention to detail!)
Lol! Have I mentioned that I’m slightly type A? 😉 Thank you for your sweet words, Kelly!
~Abby =)
Growing up with two younger brothers who shared a room almost up until the day that they moved out made me very aware of space issues with two boys. You did an excellent job of making sure each boy had his own space, and each one’s personality is expressed throughout the room. I’ll have to go back and read the rest of the series.
Aw, thank you, Jessica! I hope they’re feeling at home in their new space! 🙂 Have a great week!
~Abby =)
So adorable! I love how you gave your boys what they wanted in the room. Well done.
Thank you so much for hosting this fun challenge! It has been a blast!
~Abby =)
hi Abby! i know this is an old post but im referencing it now as im preparing to redecorate my boys´playroom next week! im curious what you use to hang all your wall art with? command strips? or do you use your picture hanging kit for EVERYTHING?
Hi, Jenny! It depends on the item. The lighter things are just hung with a small nail and whatever hook is provided on the back. We use drywall anchors when hanging heavier items (like a mirror or shelf) to make sure it’s 100% sturdy. If an item is really light or sort of odd to hang (like the arrows above the boys’ dresser), I use Command Strips. We keep all of those things in our picture hanging kit so we’re ready for anything, lol. I hope this helps! Have a great week!
