Find the best Christmas decoration storage ideas in this helpful post! You’ll have tons of simple and easy ways to store your Christmas decorations after the holiday season!
I love decorating for the holidays! But once the big day is over, putting all of our decor away can be a big job.
When it’s done right, storing our Christmas decorations in a neat and tidy way can make our lives easier when it comes time to decorate next year. So I wanted to make sure to share some simple ways I’ve found to keep those holiday decorations organized!
Simple and Easy Christmas Decoration Storage Ideas
1. Store your garland in a coffee table.
Instead of lugging your holiday decor pieces up and down stairs to the basement or attic, why not keep them close to where they’ll be used?!
Zoe from Pine and Poplar shares plans for this beautiful coffee table with amazing storage that would be perfect for holding holiday garlands, swags, mini trees, and more!
2. Declutter while you’re putting away your decor.
Amber from Amber Oliver reminds us of the most important organizing rule– declutter anything you no longer love or use often!
If you have holiday decor that has been sitting in bins for years without being used, this is a great time to free up some extra storage space by selling, donating, or pitching those items.
Letting go of the items you don’t use or love makes it so much easier to find and access your most used decor pieces whenever you need them.
3. Use an egg crate mattress pad to store odd-shaped ornaments.
Egg crates create the perfect amount of padding to keep fragile ornaments safe in storage!
Stacy from Bricks ‘N Blooms shows us how to cut the egg crate to size and use the various pieces to store several layers of ornaments in a single tub safely.
4. Sort your Christmas decorations by category.
One of the key rules of organizing is to keep like items together, and holiday decor is no exception!
Megan from The Homes I Have Made is a pro at organizing holiday decor, especially because she has the added challenge of keeping her Christmas items tidy as her family relocates with the military every few years!
Storing items by type makes it easy to find the exact holiday decor pieces you’re looking for when it comes time to decorate for Christmas.
5. Create a holiday decor closet to avoid over-buying for next year.
My jaw literally dropped when I saw this beautifully organized holiday decor closet from Tracey from Porch Daydreamer!
If you have a closet to spare, giving your decor a defined space can help keep it tidy. It also limits the amount you can own since the space is finite, which keeps you from over buying.
6. Before you pack up your decor, take pictures for next year.
Suzy from Worthing Court Blog recommends taking a few quick photos of your holiday decor before you pack it away.
If you love how your decor turned out, the pictures will help you quickly recreate your beautiful setup the next year. And if you didn’t love your setup, the pictures can help troubleshoot so you can make changes in the future.
7. Use ornament storage boxes to keep your ornaments organized by color.
Karen from Sanctuary Home Decor uses translucent storage boxes to store her fragile ornaments, keeping the ornaments of the same color together.
This makes it easy to see exactly which ornaments are in each box. And she can also quickly grab the ornaments she needs for whatever color scheme she decides to use on a particular year.
8. Use storage bags for large bulky items.
Sarah from Sarah Joy Blog loves storing her bigger Christmas decor items in bags.
Bags are easier to maneuver than bulky boxes for tree storage. And they’re a quick and easy way to store wreaths, garlands, and holiday stems as well!
9. Use QR code labels to track what’s in each box.
Kelley from Kelley Nan has a genius storage system for her holiday decor! All of her bins have a QR code that pairs with an app in her phone.
In the app, Kelly can make a list of the contents of each bin, as well as store a photo of the contents. She can scan the QR code to see what’s in the bin OR she can search the app for a particular item, and it will give her the code for the bin where she can find it.
This keeps her from searching through every bin individually to find the decor items she needs, saving her tons of time.
10. Repurpose glass jars for storing ribbon and gift tags.
I love it when storage can double as decor, and Megan from Honey We’re Home does this beautifully!
These large glass jars are perfect for storing holiday ribbon, making it easy to see the various colors and styles.
11. Use a stand-up Christmas tree storage bag to keep your tree decorated year over year.
If you have a tree you decorate the same way each year, why un-decorate it and re-decorate it every time?!
Sarah from Thrifty Decor Chick recommends using a stand-up Christmas tree storage bag to preserve your tree in its decorated state during the year, saving a lot of time and effort.
See all of Sarah’s storage solutions here.
12. Store shatterproof ornaments by color in plastic tubs.
Those flimsy plastic tubes that ornaments come in are not very conducive to storage.
Several years ago, I began dumping all of my shatter-proof ornaments into big tubs for storage instead, and it is the perfect way to organize a large amount of ornaments!
